Doylestown, PA (Dec. 24, 2009): Rob Mitchell, a congressional candidate for Pennsylvania’s 8th Congressional district, responds to the final passage of the Senate health care bill this morning. The US Senate passed its final version of health care reform this morning in a predictable party line vote of 60-39.  Rob Mitchell’s reaction was that, “Senator Reid gave out early Christmas presents in the form of money and perks with our tax dollars to Senators who were on the fence about supporting the bill.  With a weak vote early Christmas Eve, the legislation was passed.  The events leading up to the passage of this bill were underhanded. This “reform” will cost Americans billions and further destabilize our economy.  How can Americans, taxpayers and seniors return this unwanted Christmas present?”

The next step for the legislation is for the House and Senate version of the bill to be combined.  Instead of sending the bill back to House and Senate committees, Senate majority leader Harry Reid and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi intend to hammer this bill out in a private session.  “The private dealings that are going on behind closed doors display the Democratic leadership’s utter contempt for the will of the American people. For nearly 7 months, Americans have clearly voiced their opposition to this legislation at the polls, rallies, forums and town halls nationwide.”  The latest CNN poll shows that 56% of Americans disapprove of current health care legislation.

“This bill should have been scrapped months ago.  The bill is too long, takes away individual freedoms, and forces individuals to turn to government for health care services.  The question is what will Congressman Murphy do? Will Murphy show the courage and leadership expected of a true representative of the people and oppose this disastrous legislation or will he hide beneath the skirts of Nancy Pelosi as she meets in private with Harry Reid?  Inquiring minds in the 8th District want to know.”
